Your Skin’s Microbiome

Balance your microflora

The microbiome is a collection of invisible microorganisms present in a particular place. Our skin naturally contains billions of microorganisms present on it, called “Skin’s Microbiome”.

These organisms are invisible to the naked eye but can be seen using a variety of microscopes. Some are beneficial to the skin, while others encourage skin diseases such as acne.

The skin needs its normal healthy microbiome flora to maintain good health & protection.

What is your skin’s microbiome?

The microbiome is a living layer on your skin, with the balance of bacteria and fungi unique to each person. This mix is also termed microflora. Each individual has a combination, and the composition of normal skin’s microflora will vary depending on the skin’s texture, humidity and thickness. Moreover, lifestyle and personal factors will also determine your skin’s microbiome.

Areas of our skin that are rich in oil including the face, back and chest often contain higher bacterial counts compared to other skin, so these areas and persons with oily skin are more prone to acne (from unfriendly bacteria).

The benefits of the skin’s microbiome:

Skin’s microbiome is beneficial to us in many ways. Most importantly, it protects our skin from unfriendly microorganism acting as a barrier. It also maintains our skin’s pH.

The skin’s microbiome also produces essential skin lipids and essential skin nutrients.

A healthy microbiome plays a positive role in helping to maintain healthy skin. It also makes your skin appear healthier, more hydrated, and feel better.

Skin’s microbiome confers immunity by:

  • Competing with invaders for nutrients
  • Preventing pathogens to adhere to your skin
  • Empowering immune cells by influencing the development of T cells and antigen-presenting cells
  • Producing and secreting antimicrobial substances that fight and destroy invaders
  • Aiding in the prevention of skin inflammation by secreting Lipoteichoic acid (LTA)

A balanced diverse microbiome supports many of the processes that the skin needs to stay healthy and resilient.

We all have good and bad bacteria residing on our skin.

bad bacteria on the skin

When this balance is disturbed and shifts towards bad bacteria then this microbiome may function less efficiently, resulting in skin inflammation, sensitivity & irritation.

Your skin microbial communities are alive and need care to thrive. Some antimicrobial soaps and cleansers can also damage beneficial microbiome. Therefore, you should always use products that respect the skin’s pH and its microbiome while you use them.

The Melanopeel® cleansers & toners all promote a healthy microbiome balance and maintain your skin’s pH at the optimal level.
