Skin Care In Your 50’s & Beyond

Tips from the pros ✔️

You will continue to see incredible changes in your skin as you reach your 50s. If you know what changes to expect during this period, you are in a better position to address them. You CAN still have a clear and healthy complexion even when you are in your 50s or older.

Did you see read our tips about caring for your 30’s & 40’s skin? These all help determine how your skin will look in the 50’s and beyond.

What you should expect once you hit your 50s, 60s, and 70s:

Cancer risk increases:

You are now at higher risk for a skin cancer diagnosis. People in their 50s or older are more likely to be diagnosed with melanoma. Now is a good time to consult a dermatologist if you notice significant changes in current moles to rule out the diagnosis of skin cancers.

Skin becomes thinner, drier, less taut, & less radiant:

While you may have enjoyed resilient skin in your 20s, 30s and even 40s, things change in your 50’s. As you enter your 50s, your body goes through menopause, with a decrease in estrogen production. This results in less availability of healthy fibroblast cells that produce moisture and collagen. Because of this, the skin loses some youthful lustre, firmness, and may take on a crepier thin appearance. You may notice that your skin also becomes drier & rougher due to reduced circulating estrogens.

You notice even more wrinkles:

You may have fought a good fight against premature wrinkles and fine lines in your 30’s and 40s. By the time you get to 50, however, you begin to lose the fight. Not only will you notice more lines, you will see deeper and permanent ones.

Your skin takes longer time to heal:

When you were younger, all you needed was a dab of antibiotic cream to make scrapes and cuts heal in no time at all. In your 50s, you struggle to heal wounds, bruises, & repair skin damage, as the metabolism of your cells decrease.

You see more spider veins:

With age, skin becomes thinner with more fragile & weaker veins. As a result, varicose veins or spider veins can develop, especially on the face, feet, & legs. Rosacea can also become worse as your capillary networks increase.

You notice more facial hair, skin tags, & facial hyperpigmentation:

While you see the beginnings of peach fuzz when you were in your 40s, facial hair becomes more noticeable in your 50s. Aside from dealing with moles, you also have to contend with developing skin tags, probably for the first time in your life. Fortunately, you can easily have all these removed by an aesthetic skin physician. You may also notice patches of deeper pigmentation developing on your face. This is maturational hyperpigmentation, which usually improves with cosmeceuticals & prescription medications.

How we can change & protect 50’s+ skin:

1. Use good quality skin hydrators

Lotions and creams may be your better options, rather than serums. All Melanopeel lotion and cream formulations contain a proprietary Moisture-Lock™ technology to help barrier membrane repair and support the skin’s natural moisturization factor.

Tip: Environments with air-conditioning or heaters reduce air humidity and promotes drier skin. You may want to consider a humidifier to give skin a hydration boost.

2. Protect your skin from the sun:

The sun spots spots, discolorations, and photo-damage wrinkles seem to have multiplied over time. This is a normal manifestation of skin that was exposed to much sun in the teens & 20’s. Sun damage evident at this age is a surfacing emergence of sun damage from decades earlier.

While you cannot reverse your habits from your youth, the aim now should be to limit sun exposure to allow your current treatments to work better. This way, you can actually slow down the skin aging process.

While you cannot reverse skin aging, we can indeed slow it down.

Not only will our sunscreens protect you from sun-damage. So will retinoids, strong vitamin C‘s, and tranexamic acid. These reduce cellular DNA damage, give you photo-protection, and reduce cellular enzymes that break down collagen.

Retinoids, vitamin C & tranexamic acid also give you photo protection.

If you can’t avoid going outside, make sure that you are using effective protective wear – sunglasses, pants, shirts with long sleeves, hats, etc, in addition to your sun-protective skin care.

3. Internal hydration & diet:

Drinking 8 or more glasses of water a day may not be necessary, but internal hydration is a must. Remember other water sources from your diet include fruits, salads and natural juices. Diet is super important since it also provides internal antioxidants, proteins, good fats & nourishment needed to support healthy skin.

4. Be discerning about the skincare products that you useRetinols & retinoids are your best friend:

Read the labels carefully. Non-medical grade over-the-counter products often make several false claims about skin transformation and anti-aging benefits. In an unregulated industry, it is easy to fall prey to these. Remember, only medical-grade skin care can truly transform your skin on an anatomical & physiological level. This is true especially for our next generation stronger retinols which should be considered a necessity now for anti-aging.

Many over-the-counter products make false claims about anti-aging benefits.

Mature skin needs medical grade skin care strong enough to effect changes to overcome less responsive cells. It’s simple, sensible science.

5. Get regular medical check-ups:

Consult your doctor for skin care assessments. As you grow older, you are at higher risk for developing precancerous moles and other growths. Do not hesitate to call your doctor for consultation, especially when you notice peculiar skin changes. Skin cancer can be treated effectively, especially when it is diagnosed and addressed early.

 6. Stop smoking:

If you haven’t gotten rid of this particularly bad habit by now, it is definitely time to do so. Smoking does not only age your skin; it also hampers your general health.

Time for Botox®, Fillers & Aesthetic Treatments:

Consider some aesthetic treatments – Botox® & Fillers work wonders:

These are some of the oldest available aesthetic treatments available to you. When done correctly, a combination of botulinum toxins and dermal fillers are not only safe, but can smooth out folds, wrinkles, and restore volume, resulting in a more youthful appearance.

Anti-aging chemical peels make a difference:

Chemical peels should be on your to-do list at this stage. While at-home peels are great, professional grade peels are more likely to deliver the results you seek. As your skin cells get older, they become more sluggish and less responsive. To overcome this, stronger peels are needed to elicit better responses, especially on sun-damaged skin.

Lasers, and new devices can tighten, firm and lift the skin:

There are a number of laser and skin tightening devices available on the market today. Ask your aesthetic physician to recommend the best options for you. Treatments such as microneedling are often combined with other skin tightening procedures & laser treatments and can deliver some great results to reduce wrinkles and firm the skin.

Don’t stress too much about wanting to look younger:

After all is said and done, accept aging as a natural inevitable process. You can only do so much to slow its signs.

You don’t need to look young forever; in fact, no one does. Embrace character, uniqueness, and vibrance – and let your skin reflect this beauty. Remember that your true beauty shines through if you are happy. Take good care of yourself, make sensible lifestyle choices, and simply aim to feel fresh, well-rested, healthy, and content!💕
