At Melanopeel®, we know a lot about melasma. The causes, the triggers, and the reasons why treatment often fails.

To get melasma under control, a strict protocol needs to be followed. Sadly, the sun and UV light are not your friends when it comes to treating melasma. Rebound of pigmentation is likely to happen if you sun bathe without a large hat or good broad sunscreen protection.

Don’t despair! Although the outlook of melasma sounds seemingly glum, much can be done to improve your melasma and make a difference in the clarity and evenness of your complexion.

Here is your top 5 list to improve melasma:

1 – Sun Protection

Protect yourself from the sun. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF30+ that covers both UVA & UVB. Also use a wide-brimmed hat and UV sunglasses whenever possible.

2 – Diet

Consume a diet rich in plant-based antioxidants, vitamin C & omega-3 fatty acids which reduce internal body inflammation.

3 – Skin care ingredients for home care

Mandelic acid, retinol, retinoids, hydroquinone, tranexamic acid, azelaic acid, antioxidants, vitamin C, topical steroids, and botanical skin lighteners all help significantly with skin lightening. The best combination for your skin can be determined by your Melanopeel®-licensed physician.

4 – Professional treatments

Professional chemical peels specially formulated to target melasma and pigmentation are recommended. Many chemical peel types are available for improving melasma. For darker skinned patients, however, we recommend the Melanopeel® professional range of peels that you will only find available through a Melanopeel®-licensed physician. These have been calibrated and specially formulated for safety on dark skin (they also work perfectly on white skin!). There are 9 peels based on mandelic acid, for each skin type, and each with a unique balance of other alpha and beta hydroxy acids and skin-lightening ingredients to best suit the special needs of your skin conditions. Other professional treatments include microdermabrasion, light and laser treatments.

Laser treatments should be used with caution on dark skin as a wrongly prescribed wavelength will darken the condition. These services should only be done with a trained aesthetic doctor.

5 – Check your medications

Contraceptive pills and hormone replacements contain estrogens. Your melanin producing cells contain receptors for estrogens, and can overreact when triggers such as UV light activate them. Other medications such as tetracyclines, statins, diuretics, and antihistamines can make your skin more photosensitive (sensitive to sun), and therefore your skin will darken faster when exposed to the sun’s UV rays.
